I am grateful to President Donald Trump for his efforts to bring peace to the Middle East, especially for the release of the Israeli hostages (“From a hilltop village and across Israel: Tears of joy as the living hostages are returned,” Oct. 13).

That being said, I can’t fathom how President Trump can say, “We have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to put old feuds and bitter hatreds behind us,” but does nothing to do the same in this country.

Why does the president feel compelled to foment division here? Why can’t he put aside old feuds and bitter hatreds, especially his personal animosities against those who have opposed him?

I just don’t get it.
