We memorialize figures through public art whom we’ve grown to appreciate in their historical context. We’ve come to understand Christopher Columbus better, in context, and have thus removed memorials honoring him (“Judge Columbus in context of his times,” Oct. 14).

Societies commemorate figures who reflect their values. The United States has better heroes now. We’ve moved on. Rev. Michael T. Buttner would do well to follow.
