“They’ve been fantastic,” Trump said. “They’re incredible people. They also voted for me about 92% or something. So we have to remember that it’s always nice when you have that they’re spectacular people.”

During the call, McAfee asked Trump what Veterans Day — the federal holiday observed on Nov. 11 that honors all military personnel who served — means to him.

“Well to me, it means taking care of the veterans because they’ve taken care of us,” Trump answered.

He also went on to praise Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins.

“We’ve done a really good job,” Trump said. “Doug Collins is the secretary and we have a tremendous approval rating.”

Trump participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday and also spoke to veterans to commemorate the day. He was joined by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, House Speaker Mike Johnson and other administration officials for the event.

“Today, to every veteran, we love our veterans, we say the words too often left unsaid. Thank you for your service. Thank you,” Trump said. “We will never forget what you’ve done to keep America safe, sovereign and free.”

On McAfee’s show, the president touted his past with the VA, including allowing veterans to get care in the civilian sector when they couldn’t get it at the VA.

In 2017, Trump signed the Veterans Choice Program Extension and Improvement Act, where it gave veterans more freedom to see doctors they wanted.

Trump also said on the “Pat McAfee Show” that under the Biden administration, there were a lot of people who had to be fired because they didn’t care about veterans.

“We had sadists in there,” he said. “We had people that were just horrible. You couldn’t to anything about it. I got rid of that. We ended up putting in 9,000 people who love our Vets.”

McAfee is a former NFL punter who hosts “The Pat McAfee Show” on ESPN.

Trump on Sunday became the first sitting president to attend a regular-season NFL game since Jimmy Carter in 1978. Trump appeared at the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders game in D.C.

Mamdani names longtime civil servant Fuleihan to be his first deputy mayor https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/11/mamdani-names-longtime-civil-servant-fuleihan-to-be-his-first-deputy-mayor/ Tue, 11 Nov 2025 19:29:22 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11797823 New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced he will have veteran civil servant Dean Fuleihan, 74, serve as his first deputy mayor.

Fuleihan served in former Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration and oversaw the budget, according to the New York Post.

He said he fully supports Mamdani’s agenda, saying he would “work everyday to make it happen.”

Mamdani also named Elle Bisgaard-Church, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, as his chief of staff.

“I know their reputations and records of accomplishment are proof of the intent to deliver tangible change,” Mamdani said after he announced their appointments.

It was also reported earlier this month that other members of Mamdani’s transition team have worked for current Mayor Eric Adams and former Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

Mamdani announced an all-female team of co-chairs for his transition team, including former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan. The co-chairs are Khan, former first deputy mayor Maria Torres-Springer, United Way of New York City head Grace Bonilla, Melanie Hartzog, a former deputy mayor for health and human services, and political consultant Elana Leopold.

Some of Mamdani’s policies include increasing the minimum wage to $30 an hour, free busing, freezing the rent and grocery stores being owned by the city. He said his main focus would be cost of living for groceries, childcare and rent.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said over the weekend she was unlikely to support Mamdani making buses in New York City free.

“We’re spending a lot of money, so I cannot set forth a plan right now that takes money out of a system that relies on the fares of the buses and the subways,” Hochul said, according to The New York Post. She added that it was possible to make busing more affordable in the city.

The democratic socialist’s mayoral victory has inspired many young progressives to run for office, according to The Hill newspaper.

Run for Something, a progressive political organization had about 4,000 people call about running for office, according to the group’s communications director.

“When polls closed in New York, and they started calling that race, we saw another spike,” the communications director said.

Gov. Hochul pushes back on New York City mayor-elect’s plan for free buses https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/10/gov-hochul-pushes-back-on-new-york-city-mayor-elects-plan-for-free-buses/ Mon, 10 Nov 2025 21:50:46 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11793919 Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul pushed back on New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s plan to make city buses free.

During a news conference at the SOMOS political retreat in Puerto Rico over the weekend, Hochul appeared to cast doubt on if she would support Mamdani making buses in New York City free. SOMOS is an annual conference where New York and Puerto Rican leaders meet to discuss public policy and issues facing the Latino community.

“We’re spending a lot of money, so I cannot set forth a plan right now that takes money out of a system that relies on the fares of the buses and the subways,” Hochul said, according to The New York Post.

She added that it was possible to make busing more affordable in the city.

Mamdani said that he would continue to push through with his campaign promises to make the buses free.

“I continue to be excited at the work of making the slowest buses in America fast and free,” he said Monday. “And I appreciate the governor’s continued partnership in delivering on that agenda of affordability.”

Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, won the New York City mayoral race last Tuesday over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, promising to implement left-wing policies. Those include raising taxes on the wealthy to fund free transportation, rent stabilization and affordable child care. Hochul has said she is opposed to taxing the rich, but would like to find a way to make child care affordable.

Hochul endorsed Mamdani two months before the mayoral election, saying he would make life affordable for those in the city.

She said while they disagreed on some issues, they both want affordability to be better across the state.

“But in our conversations, I heard a leader who shares my commitment to a New York where children can grow up safe in their neighborhoods and where opportunity is within reach for every family,” she said. “I heard a leader who is focused on making New York City affordable — a goal I enthusiastically support.”

Christine Pelosi announces state Senate bid, passes on mom’s seat in Congress https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/10/christine-pelosi-announces-state-senate-bid-passes-on-moms-seat-in-congress/ Mon, 10 Nov 2025 19:16:12 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11793198 Christine Pelosi, daughter of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, announced Monday she would be running for state Senate. It had been speculated since Nancy Pelosi announced her retirement last week that Christine Pelosi would potentially run for her mother’s seat.

“In courtrooms, campaigns and corridors of power, I’ve fought to build Power For The People,” she wrote on social media platform X. “And that’s why I’m running for California Senate.”

Last week, the younger Pelosi had avoided questions about her potentially running for California’s 11th district that Nancy Pelosi currently represents.

“I’m running to represent you, San Francisco in Sacramento, fighting for consumer rights, women’s rights, gun violence survivors, immigrants and our most vulnerable communities, against the threat we face,” Christine Pelosi, 59, said in a 42-second video posted to X. “What do we do when our freedoms are under attack? We speak up, we fight back and we organize power for the people, and that’s what I want to do for you.”

Christine Pelosi, one of Nancy Pelosi’s five children with husband Paul, has been an executive of the Democratic National Convention since 2017 and has been active with grassroots work for the party. Christine Pelosi’s grandfather, the late Rep. Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., was a Democrat representing Maryland in the House from 1939 to 1947 before becoming mayor of Baltimore from 1947 until 1959.

Nancy Pelosi, 85, announced on Nov. 6 that she would not be seeking reelection in 2026.

“As we go forward, my message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power,” Pelosi said in her retirement announcement. “We have made history; we have made progress. We have always led the way, and now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy, and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear.”

She has served in Congress since 1987 and was the first female Speaker of the House in 2006. She twice held that role.

There have been two prominent names associated with replacing Pelosi, according to reports — multi-millionaire software engineer Saikat Chakrabarti, who previously served as chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and state Sen. Scott Wiener.

Female rivals for NY governor plan to tackle affordability with opposite strategies https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/07/female-rivals-for-ny-governor-plan-to-tackle-affordability-with-opposite-strategies/ Fri, 07 Nov 2025 18:34:17 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11786711

Affordability is also one of Hochul’s talking points as well, though both women have varying ideas as to how to accomplish it.

“I am running for governor to make New York affordable and safe FOR ALL,” Stefanik wrote on social media platform X. “Democrats, Republicans and Independents will unify to save our state.”

She said that it was time to fire Hochul and save New York.

After Stefanik’s announcement she was running for governor, Hochul’s campaign put out a statement admonishing the candidate for her ties to President Donald Trump.

“Sellout Stefanik is Donald Trump’s number one cheerleader in Congress and his right-hand woman in his war on New York. Apparently, screwing over New Yorkers in Congress wasn’t enough — now she’s trying to bring Trump’s chaos and skyrocketing costs to our state.,” the communications director for Hochul’s campaign said in a statement. “While Stefanik puts Trump first and New York last, Governor Hochul is lowering costs, cutting middle-class taxes, and fighting for the New Yorkers Stefanik abandoned.”

Hochul became governor of New York in 2021 after then-Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned over a sexual harassment scandal.

Recently, New York City democratic socialist mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani won his race, focusing on main issues like cost of living. But he also sought to tax the rich to pay for his agenda, and raising taxes is something Hochul is opposed to.

Hochul has addressed the cost of living in the state and has issued “inflation refund checks” for eligible New Yorkers that are a one-time payment from the state to help residents with rising costs.

During her campaign video posted to X, Stefanik said the high cost of living is due to Hochul’s leadership.

According to a poll taken by Siena Research Institute, in August, Hochul had a 42-44% approval rating.

Stefanik argued that high taxes are also because of Hochul’ and her goal is to make the state more affordable.

“When New Yorkers were looking for leadership from our governor, she bent the knee to the raging Defund the Police, Tax Hiking Communist causing catastrophe for New York families,” Stefanik wrote on X.

When it comes to gun safety, both candidates also have different approaches to policy.

As governor, Hochul has invested $370 million to combat gun violence across the state. While serving in Congress, Stefanik introduced a bill to stop guns from being “unconstitutionally” taken.

“I am proud to re-introduce the Modern Firearm Safety Act to end the unconstitutional gun-grabbing agenda thrust on law-abiding New York residents by Far Left Democrats like Kathy Hochul,” Stefanik said in a July statement. “This legislation would ban Albany Democrats from imposing illegal handgun roster requirements meant to deter gun ownership.”

Stefanik argued in a video that single party Democratic ruling is the reason for the state being unaffordable and touted a middle class tax cut to help New Yorkers.

Alabama Sen. Tuberville says he would support US troops going into Nigeria https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/06/alabama-sen-tuberville-says-he-would-support-us-troops-going-into-nigeria/ Thu, 06 Nov 2025 20:36:15 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11782064 Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., says he would support U.S. troops going into Nigeria amid news of Christians allegedly being persecuted.

During a Fox News interview on Wednesday, Tuberville was asked as a member of the Armed Services Committee if he would support U.S. troops going to Nigeria.

“You bet I would,” Tuberville said in response. “[There’s been] 62,000 Christians killed in Nigeria.”

He addedthere reportedly have been 100,000 Christians killed in Africa and 18,000 churches burned.

“We cannot allow this to happen to people who can’t defend themselves,” Tuberville said. “It’s just absolutely insane.”

He said if troops were to go into Nigeria, it wouldn’t be like going into Ukraine, Iran or China.

“This would be going in and helping innocent people that would be able to take back over their country,” Tuberville said.

The former head football coach at Auburn University in Alabama and three other major college programs, Tuberville announced in May that he would run for Alabama governor in 2026.

“I’m a football coach. I’m a leader. I’m a builder. I’m a recruiter, and we’re going to grow Alabama,” Tuberville said. “We’re going to bring manufacturing to this state. We’re going to stop this illegal immigration. We’re going to make education better again, and we’re going to do everything possible to make sure our kids … stay in this state and work.”

President Donald Trump last week said he has labeled Nigeria a “country of particular concern” because of the persecution of Christians. He suggested military action could be on the table.

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

During his time in the Senate, Tuberville has aligned himself with Trump and that apparently includes supporting sending troops into Nigeria. Tuberville has been in the Senate since 2021.

Amid the reports of the alleged persecution of Nigerian Christians, the African country’s government has denied these claims.

“The Federal Government strongly condemns and categorically refutes recent allegations by certain international platforms and online influencers suggesting that terrorists operating in Nigeria are engaged in a systematic genocide against Christians,” Minister Mohammed Idris said earlier this year.

Top five moments from Erika Kirk’s first televised interview since husband was killed https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/06/top-five-moments-from-erika-kirks-first-televised-interview-since-husband-was-killed/ Thu, 06 Nov 2025 16:17:31 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11783325

1. Erika Kirk said she has never seen the assassination video of her husband.

“I never saw the video, I never will see it,” she told Watters in the interview that aired on Wednesday night. “I never want to see it, there are certain things you see in your life that you can never unsee. There are certain things you see in your life that mark your soul forever.

“I don’t want my husband’s public assassination to be something I ever see. I don’t want my kids to ever see that.”

Kirk was shot on Sep. 10 while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. The suspect, Tyler Robinson, has been charged and could potentially face the death penalty.

2. She said she collapsed in the parking lot of a doctor’s office when she heard her husband was shot.

Erika Kirk was at a doctor’s appointment with her mother when she said her husband’s chief of staff, Mikey McCoy, called her after he was shot.

“I’ll never forget, him just being like, ‘Charlie’s been shot,’ ” she said. “He’s been shot, get the kids. Get security, get the kids, get the kids, he’s been shot. I sprinted out of her treatment center and just collapsed in the middle of the parking lot.”

3. Erika Kirk said she was advised not to see the body after he was shot.

Erika Kirk said an officer advised that she not see her husband’s body until it was at the mortuary.

“I responded to him and I said, ‘With all due respect, sir, I want to see what they did to my husband,’ ” she said. “And I want to kiss him because I did not get to give him a kiss this morning.”

4. She said their 3-year-old daughter still asks if she can visit her dad in heaven.

Erika and Charlie Kirk had two children together. Their son turned 1 in May and their daughter turned 3 in August.

“If ever you want to talk to Daddy, you just look up to the sky and start talking to him — he can hear you,” Erika Kirk said she tells her daughter.

5. Erika Kirk said her husband named all their kids’ stuffed animals.

Watters asked for something about Charlie Kirk that only she knows about him that no one else knows.

“He would name all of my daughter’s and my son’s stuffed animals,” she said. “Every single one of them. His favorite animal was the platypus. It’s so random but it’s so funny.”

On Wednesday, there was also a massive Turning Point USA event at Auburn University in Alabama that was packed.

President Donald Trump’s son, Eric, was there along with his wife, Lara. Eric Trump called his father during the event and put him on speaker phone.

“Well, I want to just say hello to everybody, I hope Erika is doing a good job and Lara is doing a good job,” Trump said. “And Auburn is a special place, I’ve been there many times.”

Judge in Comey case orders prosecutors to produce documents from investigation https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/05/judge-in-comey-case-orders-prosecutors-to-produce-documents-from-investigation/ Wed, 05 Nov 2025 19:28:43 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11781566 A federal judge on Wednesday demanded prosecutors in the ongoing criminal case of former FBI Director James Comey turn over documents from the investigation to defense attorneys.

Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick expressed concern the Department of Justice was aiming to “indict first and investigate later,” according to The Associated Press.

Fitzpatrick gave prosecutors until the end of the day on Thursday to give the lawyers material from the grand jury and other information that was seized during the investigation.

The order from Fitzpatrick came after arguments in which Comey’s attorneys said they were at a disadvantage because they had not been able to review information that was collected years ago as part of an investigation into FBI media leaks, the AP reported.

Lawyers for Comey had already asked for a transcript of grand jury proceedings, citing some irregularities in the process and potential legal and factual errors they said could result in the dismissal of the case, according to AP.

The defense said prosecutor Lindsey Halligan’s inexperience had created confusion. Halligan is a former White House aide and lawyer for President Donald Trump. She was installed as U.S. attorney after the prosecutor who had been overseeing the investigation resigned under pressure  from Trump to indict Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

“It is virtually unheard of for a brand-new prosecutor to make her first grand jury presentation alone, without the supervision and guidance of an experienced prosecutor to ensure the absence of factual and legal errors,” Comey’s lawyer’s wrote in a filing last week, according to AP.

Comey has been charged with lying to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding. The indictment came after Trump seemingly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to go after Comey.

He has pleaded not guilty and his attorneys argue what is happening to him is a vindictive prosecution that should not go forward.

It was reported last month that one of the prosecutors in the Comey case might be disqualified because of a conflict of interest. The prosecutors said the conflict of interest is regarding communications between Comey and the attorney, Patrick Fitzgerald.

Trump picks Isaacman for NASA administrator despite withdrawing nomination months ago https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/05/trump-picks-isaacman-for-nasa-administrator-despite-withdrawing-nomination-months-ago/ Wed, 05 Nov 2025 16:20:10 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11781104 President Donald Trump has announced he would again be nominating Jared Isaacman to be NASA administrator.

“Sean Duffy has done an incredible job as Interim Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA),” Trump wrote on TRUTH Social on Tuesday. “This evening, I am pleased to nominate Jared Isaacman, an accomplished business leader, philanthropist, pilot, and astronaut, as Administrator of NASA.”

Trump had nominated Isaacman, a tech billionaire, months ago, but pulled the nomination because of “prior associations.”

Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk was upset when Isaacman’s nomination was pulled, and he reportedly ended up lashing out at Trump. Isaacmanis an associate of Musk’s.

Duffy was named the interim NASA administrator after the nomination was pulled.

“Jared’s passion for Space, astronaut experience, and dedication to pushing the boundaries of exploration, unlocking the mysteries of the universe, and advancing the new Space economy, make him ideally suited to lead NASA into a bold new Era,” Trump’s TRUTH post continued.

In December, Trump announced he had chosen Isaacman as NASA’s next administrator. He used to work with Musk at SpaceX and funded the company’s first private spacewalk.

His nomination was approved by the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee in late April, and a full vote from the Senate had been expected before his nomination was pulled.

During his testimony, Isaacson saw returning to the moon and sending astronauts to Mars as reachable goals, saying the expeditions could be developed in parallel, according to the Associated Press. “I don’t think these are either-or,” he said, adding that. NASA could afford both under current funding.

In ‘The View’ appearance, Greene says there needs to be more free speech, civility https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/05/in-the-view-appearance-greene-says-there-needs-to-be-more-free-speech-civility/ Wed, 05 Nov 2025 14:32:28 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11780849

One of the hosts of the show, Whoopi Goldberg, asked if free speech had gotten “harder” and if she approved of the National Guard going into major cities.

“Well, on free speech, I want to say that I think that all of us here are doing a great job of exchanging our ideas and things that we believe in, and we’re doing it in a very professional and kind way and, in my opinion, I think we need more of that in America,” Greene answered on Tuesday.

She said a lot of people wanted her to come on “The View” and argue with the women on the show.

“I didn’t want to do that today, because I believe that people with powerful voices like myself and like you and especially women-to-women, we need to pave a new path,” Greene said. “This country, our beautiful country — our red, white and blue flag — is just being ripped to shreds and I think it takes women of maturity to sew it back together, and I think that happens through free speech.”

“The View” is widely considered a liberal-leaning show with Goldberg and co-hosts Sara Haines, Joy Behar, Ana Navarro, Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin. Greene’s appearance was rare for a conservative guest.

Hostin told Greene during the show that “I’m sitting here just stumped. You know, because you are a very different person than I thought you were.”

Greene has been making headlines lately for being critical of GOP leadership despite being a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump.

In mid-October she said the Republican Party is full of “weak” men.

“Whereas President Trump has a very strong, dominant style — he’s not weak at all — a lot of the men here in the House are weak,” Greene told The Washington Post. “There’s a lot of weak Republican men and they’re more afraid of strong Republican women.

Also last month, she broke away from her party on the issue of the Affordable Care Act, insisting insurance premiums for 2026 will increase and Republicans have not come up with a plan to address the matter.

Greene has also been one of the few GOP politicians critical of the Israeli government.
