Air Force Base in Florida orders removal of Christmas decorations https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/11/bah-humbug-air-force-base-in-florida-orders-removal-of-christmas-decorations/ Tue, 11 Nov 2025 19:59:56 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11797981 Service members and their families who live at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida were allegedly advised to “remove” Christmas decorations from the exterior of their homes.

A photo shared on an unofficial Air Force social media group showed what appeared to be an email from Balfour Beatty Communities, which manages privatized military housing across 55 Army, Navy and Air Force installations.

“While driving [through] the neighborhoods yesterday, it was noticed that Christmas decorations have already begun to appear within the community,” the message noted, per the post. “All holiday decorations should be reflective in their respective months and not any sooner than 30 days before the given holiday. If you currently have Yuletide decor present on the outside of your home, please remove it and reinstall it in accordance with your community guidelines listed below.”

Air Force Capt. Justin Davidson-Beebe, public affairs chief at Tyndall, reportedly said Balfour was well within its rights.

“They are enforcing the community standards outlined in the legally binding lease agreement all residents voluntarily sign,” Davidson-Beebe told Task & Purpose, a military news outlet.

Davidson-Beebe added that the standards note that winter decorations can be displayed starting the week after Thanksgiving through the first week of the New Year.

“These guidelines are not part of a broader Air Force policy,” Davidson-Beebe said, per the media outlet. “Since community standards are set by the privatized housing management company at some installations, standards may vary from base to base.”

A spokesperson from Balfour Beatty Communities said the company’s community guidelines note that decorations are permitted within 30 days leading up to a holiday.

“While this is not a Department of Defense policy, it is common practice across rental communities and homeowners’ associations to help ensure neighborhoods remain neat, consistent, and enjoyable for all residents,” the spokesperson said, according to Task & Purpose. “Most residents appreciate clear, reasonable guidelines so that the community remains a pleasant place to live and celebrate.”

The policy, however, didn’t stop people from expressing their thoughts, with several sharing images of “How The Grinch Stole Christmas.”

“I’m the Grinch until the day after Thanksgiving. But it’s wild that they have it in writing,” one person wrote in reply to the photo of the email.

“Mail them a ton of Christmas cards. Seems appropriate. (With extra glitter),” a second person wrote.

Another appeared to agree with the policy.

“I mean, can we give Thanksgiving a chance??!!”

White House says US has a six-month streak of zero illegal border crossings https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/10/white-house-says-us-has-a-six-month-streak-of-zero-illegal-border-crossings/ Mon, 10 Nov 2025 15:29:43 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11792533 There haven’t been any illegal border crossings in the United States during the last six months, according to the Trump administration.

The narrative that emerged from the White House was simple and triumphant.

“All we needed was a new president,” administration officials wrote on social media on Friday.

The White House officials described it as “a stark contrast” to the Biden administration, saying at least 10,000 unvetted migrants illegally crossed the southern border every day at the peak of “the invasion.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said it “continues to deliver the most secure border in American history,” with preliminary data for October showing record-low encounters.

“History made: the lowest border crossings in October history and the sixth straight month of ZERO releases,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a news release. “This is most secure border ever. Thank you, President [Donald] Trump and our brave DHS law enforcement. You make America proud!”

CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott shared similar sentiments.

“Our mission is simple: secure the border and safeguard this nation — and that’s exactly what we are doing,” Scott said. “No excuses. No politics. Just results delivered by the most dedicated law-enforcement professionals in the country. We’re not easing up — we’re pushing even harder.”

During October, which marked the start of the 2026 fiscal year, the CBP said there were 30,561 total encounters across the nation.

Throughout the month, the CBP said the agency made 9,845 arrets. It also said each person was processed according to law, describing it as a milestone unmatched in modern border history.

“In October 2024, 312 aliens were apprehended every four hours — today, that’s one day’s worth of apprehensions,” according to the release.

The CBP added that since Jan. 21 through the end of October, there were 106,134 total enforcement encounters along the Southwest Border. The agency said that number is less than the Biden administration’s monthly average of 155,485 encounters.

Noem: Immigration and Customs Enforcement has more than 200,000 job applicants https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/10/noem-immigration-and-customs-enforcement-has-more-than-200000-job-applicants/ Mon, 10 Nov 2025 15:10:42 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11792505

The applications come as the Department of Homeland Security said ICE agents face an 8,000% increase in death threats and violent attacks.

“ICE has received more than 200,000 applications from patriotic Americans who want to defend the homeland by removing the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens from the U.S.,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Friday. “Americans are answering their country’s call to serve and help remove murderers, pedophiles, rapists, terrorists and gang members from our country.”

ICE is offering “a robust package” of benefits, according to a news release, including:

  • A maximum $50,000 signing bonus
  • Student loan repayment and forgiveness options
  • 25% Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP) for HSI Special Agents
  • Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime for Enforcement Removal Operations (ERO) Deportation Officers
  • Enhanced retirement benefits

During the summer, Noem said there was a 1,000% increase in assaults on immigration law enforcement officers.

“Because of the rhetoric of politicians in Washington, D.C., but also here locally, our law enforcement officers have been demonized, and because of that, the consequences that they’ve had to face has been overwhelming for them at times,” Noem said at a news conference in October.

A recent case involved an ICE officer who the agency said was “brutally assaulted” by a convicted child predator.

ICE identified the suspect on Thursday as 33-year-old Walter Leonel Perez Rodriguez, a twice deported immigrant in the country illegally and a child predator from El Salvador.

The agency said Perez Rodriguez hit the officer in the face with a metal coffee cup when the officer was arresting him in Houston last week. A photo shows a gash in the officer’s upper lip that ICE said required 13 stitches.

The officer’s face was also seriously burned during the incident, according to DHS.

“This young officer’s life has forever been altered as a result of the continued hyper-politicization of routine law enforcement activities and spread of misinformation by the media, NGOs and other groups opposed to immigration enforcement in this country,” ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Houston Field Office Director Bret Bradford said in a news release. “Rather than take their issues up with Congress, they shift their rage at the brave men and women of ICE who are putting their lives on the line every day to defend our communities from foreign terrorists, gang members, and other violent criminal aliens who are in the country illegally.

“By focusing on our officers and spreading false propaganda about how we accomplish our mission, they are emboldening dangerous illegal aliens like this child predator to physically resist arrest. This insanity has to stop before anyone else gets hurt.”

Noem, meanwhile, said at least 515,000 immigrants in the U.S. illegally have been arrested and deported since January.

“Seventy percent of those individuals have pending or criminal charges against them,” she said, adding that 1.6 million illegal immigrants self-deported under President Donald Trump. Noem said anyone who wants “to help arrest and remove the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens from America’s street” should apply at ice.gov/join.

Reports: DOJ preparing to issue grand jury subpoenas amid Brennan investigation https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/06/reports-doj-preparing-to-issue-grand-jury-subpoenas-amid-brennan-investigation/ Thu, 06 Nov 2025 18:59:30 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11784240 The Department of Justice is planning to issue multiple grand jury subpoenas amid an investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan, according to reports.

The news comes on Thursday, which marked a few weeks after Brennan was referred to the DOJ for criminal prosecution over allegations he “knowingly made false statements” to Congress in 2023 about his role in what the Trump administration has dubbed “the Russia collusion hoax.”

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Jason Reding Quiñones is supervising the probe, according to Fox News. Brennan has not been indicted, and it’s unclear if a grand jury would indict him, but evidence will be presented to a grand jury in south Florida, Fox News reported.

Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan — and many other GOP lawmakers — have said they believe Brennan should be indicted.

“Making false statements before Congress is a crime that undermines the integrity of the Committee’s constitutional duty to conduct oversight,” Jordan wrote in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi on Oct. 21.

The allegations against Brennan surround his comments regarding the Steele dossier, several memos created by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele. The memos accused President Donald Trump and his allies of a large-scale election conspiracy with the Kremlin.

Retired veteran FBI Special Agent in Charge Jody Weis recently said Brennan claimed the CIA wasn’t involved. Weis added that Brennan said the first time he saw the dossier was after the election.

“However, the committee found out this was not correct,” Weis said. “Brennan personally received and analyzed that dossier pre-election. Brennan claimed that the CIA was very much opposed to including the dossier in the intelligence community assessment, or ICA, on Russian interference.

“However, the Committee found that Brennan actually overruled senior CIA analysts’ objections to use it.”

In fact, Weis said, they discovered an email that noted “my bottom line is that I believe that the information warrants inclusion in the report.”

Weis said when the analysts pushed back, Brennan replied, “yes, but doesn’t it ring true.”

“Brennen claimed the dossier was not used in any way as a basis for the CIA,” Weis said. “But the house report shows that the ICA — the intelligence community assessment — actually referenced and summarized the dossier. So, despite its lack of cooperation, Brennan pushed against objections from senior CIA analysts for its inclusion in the annual report.”

Weis said Brennan’s referral to the DOJ for further investigation, as well as the recent indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, prove that the Trump administration is going to hold Obama-era officials accountable for “what they did with the Russian hoax case because that totally undermined President [Donald] Trump’s first term.”

Report: Combs ‘bragging’ Trump will pardon him, vows to repay fellow inmates https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/05/report-combs-bragging-trump-will-pardon-him-vows-to-repay-fellow-inmates/ Wed, 05 Nov 2025 15:39:01 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11780996 Sean “Diddy” Combs, who has been locked up since 2024, reportedly told fellow inmates President Donald Trump is going to help him get out of prison.

That’s according to a report from TMZ.

Citing unnamed sources at the Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institute in New Jersey, the media outlet on Tuesday said “Diddy is yapping about Trump pardoning him in early 2026.”

TMZ also said sources claimed Combs is telling other inmates he “will take care of them when he’s pardoned and set free.”

The news comes a few weeks after the White House denied TMZ’s report that Trump was “seriously considering granting Diddy a pardon.” In an email a White House official described it as “fake news.”

Combs was sentenced on Oct. 3 after his conviction in July on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, a violation of the Mann Act. The jury acquitted Combs of the more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering after a two-month trial.

Just a few days after the sentencing, Trump shared that Combs was one of many who have asked him for a presidential pardon.

“A lot of people have asked me for pardons,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “I call him Puff Daddy, [he] has asked me for a pardon.”

The 55-year-old former rapper and music mogul was recently relocated to Fort Dix, according to his listing in the federal Bureau of Prisons inmate database. He was moved from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he had been held since his arrest in September 2024.

Lawyers for Combs previously asked a judge to “strongly recommend” transferring him to the low-security male prison so he could take part in the facility’s drug treatment program.

If Trump doesn’t end up pardoning Combs, he is set to remain incarcerated until May 8, 2028.

Pentagon policy change lets commanders override decisions on transgender troops’ status https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/11/03/pentagon-policy-change-lets-commanders-override-decisions-on-transgender-troops-status/ Mon, 03 Nov 2025 15:46:06 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11775371 A new Pentagon policy just made it harder for transgender troops to challenge their dismissal from the military, marking another step in enforcing the Trump administration’s ban.

That’s according to a memo The Associated Press obtained on Friday.

Citing the memo, which was sent to all military branches on Oct. 8, the AP reported that “if military separation boards decide to allow transgender service members to remain in uniform, commanders can override that decision.”

The memo also sets up an additional hurdle of requiring that trans service members appear before separation boards in uniforms that match the gender assigned to them at birth. If they fail to do so, their absence can be used against them.

President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have moved away from diversity, equity and inclusion efforts as a way to make the military the “world’s most lethal and effective fighting force.”

At one point, Hegset said the Pentagon is “leaving wokeness and weakness behind” and that includes “no more dudes in dresses.”

In January, Trump signed an executive order, “Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness,” noting that anyone who has been diagnosed with, has a history of or shows symptoms of gender dysphoria — as well as those who have undergone cross-sex hormone therapy or gender reassignment surgery — is disqualified from military service.

“Success in this existential mission requires a singular focus on developing the requisite warrior ethos, and the pursuit of military excellence cannot be diluted to accommodate political agendas or other ideologies harmful to unit cohesion,” according to the order.

At the time, defense officials estimated that about 4,200 personnel actively serving had been diagnosed with gender dysphoria — when a person’s biological sex does not match their gender identity

Four months later, the Pentagon announced it started moving as many as 1,000 openly identifying transgender troops out of the military and gave others who have yet to openly identify as transgender 30 days to remove themselves.

FDA announces plan to slash ‘sky-high’ drug costs and save Americans money https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/10/29/fda-announces-plan-to-slash-sky-high-drug-costs-and-save-americans-money/ Wed, 29 Oct 2025 20:05:52 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11767384 Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. unveiled a new plan on Wednesday that he said will drastically reduce drug prices in the U.S.

He said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is taking “bold, decisive action” to make it more affordable to develop biosimilar medicines — lower-cost “generic” alternatives to biologic drugs that treat serious diseases.

“We’re cutting unnecessary red tape, reducing uncertainty and making it easier for innovators to bring the safe, affordable biosimilars to the market,” Kennedy said during a news conference on Wednesday.

Kennedy said on average biosimilars cost 50% less than their brand-name counterparts, while their entry into the market drives down brand-name prices by another 25%.

“Today’s announcement of biosimilar reform furthers President [Donald] Trump’s directive to lower drug prices for the American people,” Kennedy said. “Biologics treat many chronic diseases, but for too long, a burdensome approval process has kept patients from accessing more affordable biosimilars. This bold action by the FDA accelerates biosimilar development, drives market competition, expands patient options and advances our mission to Make America Healthy Again.”

Kennedy said the FDA released new draft guidance for companies that develop biosimilars, noting the guidance “reflects modern science and common sense.”

The FDA, in a news release, said it proposed significant changes to simplify biosimilarity studies and reduce what it described as unnecessary clinical testing. The agency said it is also planning initiatives to make it easier for biosimilars to be approved as interchangeable with brand-name biologics, helping patients and pharmacists access lower-cost options more readily.

“Biosimilars are often far more affordable to patients and have the promise to significantly lower health care costs in America,” FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, who joined Kennedy during the news conference, said. “By streamlining the biosimilar development process and helping advance interchangeability, we can achieve massive cost reductions for advanced treatments for cancer, autoimmune diseases, and rare disorders affecting millions of Americans.”

The news comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order in May to cut prescription drug and pharmaceutical prices by 30% to 80%, calling it one of the most consequential in the nation’s history.

The goal is to enforce a “most-favored nation” pricing policy that requires pharmaceutical companies to ensure Americans do not pay more for brand-name drugs than the lowest prices charged in countries with similar economic conditions.

The president previously said prescription drugs in the U.S. have been far more expensive — sometimes five to 10 times higher — than in other countries, despite being made by the same companies in the same facilities.

He called the current drug pricing system “unfair” and claimed Americans are being “ripped off” by pharmaceutical companies.

“Our country will finally be treated fairly, and our citizens Healthcare Costs will be reduced by numbers never even thought of before,” Trump said at the time.

The Trump administration reached agreements with Pfizer and AstraZeneca to offer prescription discounts. AstraZeneca also pledged to list its top drugs on TrumpRx, a new website where consumers can buy medications directly from manufacturers.

Trump denies he’s naming White House ballroom after himself, calls it ‘fake news’ https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/10/27/trump-denies-hes-naming-white-house-ballroom-after-himself-calls-it-fake-news/ Mon, 27 Oct 2025 13:17:46 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11761042 President Donald Trump said he has no intentions of naming the 90,000-square foot ballroom he’s constructing at the White House after himself.

He said reports claiming otherwise are false.

“I don’t have any plan to call it after myself — that was fake news,” Trump told reporters late Friday night before boarding Air Force One to head to Asia. “We’re probably going to call it the Presidential Ballroom or something like that. We haven’t really thought about a name yet.”

Trump’s comments comes as a report indicated officials referred to it as “The President Donald J. Trump Ballroom.”

The White House’s East Wing was demolished last week as part of Trump’s plan to construct the ballroom.

Trump last week said he and other donors raised about $350 million for the project. When a reporter asked him how much he plans to donate, he said he “won’t be able to tell you until we finish.”

“I’ll donate whatever’s needed, I’ll tell you that,” he added.

Trump also said the White House has been neglected in recent years. He said former President Joe Biden didn’t do anything to maintain it.

“This house was not taken care of the way it was supposed to be,” Trump said.

When the updates are complete, Trump said the ballroom “will be the most beautiful ballroom anywhere in the world.”

The cost of construction recently climbed to $300 million — up from the first estimate of $200 million — with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying Trump has been “incredibly transparent” throughout the process.

“It’s not going to cost taxpayers a dime,” Leavitt told reporters on Thursday.

Leavitt also showed the media photos of previous projects at the White House, including the construction of the West Wing and the West Terrace in 1902, as well as the construction of the East Terrace, and the expansion of the West Wing in 1934.

“These images look quite similar to what you and the American people are seeing today,” she said.

“How did that rubble get there?” she added while pointing to an image of a previous construction project dating to the 1950s.

Trump’s biggest adversaries, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, took to social media to criticize the demolition.

Ripping apart the White House just like he’s ripping apart the Constitution,” Newsom wrote on X.

“It’s not his house. It’s your house. And he’s destroying it,” Clinton said in a separate post on X.

In her own X post, Leavitt said “White House ballroom construction derangement syndrome” has been dominating the Democrat’s current rhetoric.”

“Their sole purpose in life appears to be just to be angry over anything and everything President Donald Trump does, even when the accusations are a complete detachment from reality,” she wrote. “Like nearly everything these people say anymore, their antics are not grounded in reality and are completely unhinged.”

Trump said he is proud of the building process and looks forward to its completion, expected in 2029.

“For more than 150 years, every President has dreamt about having a Ballroom at the White House to accommodate people for grand parties, State Visits, etc.” Trump recently wrote on Truth Social. “This Ballroom will be happily used for Generations to come!”

She also said renovations are “something that presidents have done for years and years.”

The cost of construction recently climbed to $300 million — up from the first estimate of $200 million — with Leavitt saying Trump has been “incredibly transparent” throughout the process.

“It’s not going to cost taxpayers a dime,” Leavitt told reporters on Thursday during a news conference.

Multiple companies and individual billionaires have donated for the White House ballroom, the administration announced Thursday.

The donors include major companies Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Comcast Corp. Major players in the crypto industry that are also funding the project are Ripple and Coinbase, according to Politico. Tobacco companies such as Reynolds American and Altria Group are also financially supporting the ballroom, along with individual donors.

“These images look quite similar to what you and the American people are seeing today,” she said.

The East Wing, a two-story structure of drawing rooms and offices, has been turned into rubble, as it was demolished this past week as part of Trump’s plan to construct the ballroom.

Trump pardons Binance founder Zhao, citing no fraud amid crypto tensions https://www.baltimoresun.com/2025/10/23/trump-pardons-binance-founder-zhao-citing-no-fraud-amid-crypto-tensions/ Thu, 23 Oct 2025 21:04:48 +0000 https://www.baltimoresun.com/?p=11756043 President Donald Trump has pardoned convicted cryptocurrency founder Changpeng Zhao, who created Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the news on Thursday, with Trump signing the pardon a day prior.

“President Trump exercised his constitutional authority by issuing a pardon for Mr. Zhao, who was prosecuted by the Biden administration in their war on cryptocurrency,” Leavitt said. “In their desire to punish the cryptocurrency industry, the Biden administration pursued Mr. Zhao despite no allegations of fraud or identifiable victims.”

Zhao, a billionaire who in 2024 pleaded guilty to one count of failing to maintain an anti-money-laundering program, previously asked Trump for a pardon. He stepped down from his role as CEO of Binance and went on to serve at least four months in prison and paid a $50 million fine.

“I failed here,” Zhao said last year. “I deeply regret my failure, and I am sorry.”

Zhao, 48, has ties to World Liberty Financial, a crypto venture that Trump and his sons Eric and Donald Jr. launched in September.
